The Full Story
Nothing creates the need for reinvention like living in New York City during a pandemic.
But let me go back a little further...
After a Hoosier childhood and getting my BA in Spanish from Wellesley College in Massachusetts (which included the privilege of a year living in Spain), I took a few years to figure out that I might actually be an actor at heart.
So I set about getting my graduate degree in Acting from Wayne State University/the Hilberry Repertory Theatre in Detroit with an additional stop along the way to train at the Moscow Art Theatre School. After graduation, I started my professional career at the Michigan Shakespeare Festival before heading off to work on various stages in New York.
Naturally, living the life of an actor means one has the opportunity (read: necessity) to accrue a curious array of experience and sundry, side-job-related skills. In my case, that meant being a certified CPR instructor in NYC public schools and an administrative assistant/receptionist at a Midtown Manhattan hedge fund—you know, totally related stuff.
Then, March 2020 rolled around. No need to recap anything here, because we were all there and already know too much.
But long story...well, long... By late 2020, family health needs and artistic opportunities lost meant a pandemic-driven reinvention was in order, and it needed to take place in my home state of Indiana.
So, my career as a voice actor began, specifically in the form of audiobook narration from my professional home recording studio. In other news, the fresh air and wide-open, Midwestern spaces proved far more enchanting than kickboxing alone in my apartment so a road-running habit was also born.
Running—and the childhood performance footwear obsession that it re-awakened ("It's gotta be the shoes")—would soon provide the means to sharpen my once-dormant writing skills as a regular product-tester, review contributor, and editor for one of the best (and first) to do it: WearTesters.
Additional work as a virtual event facilitator and voice artist appearances on social media marketing videos would develop into creating short-form video content end-to-end with my now producing partner, offering me another playful dimension in which to work.
And that's where I find myself today: at the intersection where my strange little collection of skills, passions, and experience can be put to full use for storytelling of all kinds—whether on the page, on the stage, behind the mic, or on a digital media platform near you.
Now I just need to figure out how to sneak in my love of cats and the humble pigeon somewhere...
